"New in Bisbee, we were wiped out by Jan's work...from the incredible colors of her landscapes, that Nature surely must envy, to her ability to capture those random solitary moments we all experience. And then there are those dogs..."
"My wife and I have been collecting (and loving) Jan's work for more than twenty years. Her oils and pastels hang throughout our home. Jan's "other worldly" affair with color and her intriguing "Americana" view, distinguish her streetscapes, landscapes and figurative work from all others. From room to room and day to day, we feel fortunate to share in Jan's vision of the world."
"I love color and the counterpoint of shadow and light. Perhaps this is
why I am so often drawn to the art of Jan Searle. Her sense of
perspective and the texture of her work are also especially appealing to
me. I have always collected in a very spontaneous and I know
immediately when there is a piece which I want to own and see every day.
Perhaps this is why my residences have always been so filled with art
that I have to buy another to showcase all of the work which brings me
happiness to see. Fortunately, Jan Searle paints pictures in many sizes; otherwise I would
not be able to find the wall space on which to hang yet another of her
joyously colorful artistry.
"Yes, I am working on an early 20th century arts and crafts house which
has a wonderful long, tall and wide hallway, The halogen spots are
already in place on the ceiling and there are some empty spaces just
waiting to be filled with the enchanting paintings of Jan Searle."
"To put it simply, Jan Searle's pastels are just wonderful. I have 3 and am looking forward to my fourth."
"I have collected the work of Jan Searle since 1995, and have been pleased to see the persistence of her vision—she is a mature artist with a sophisticated intention.
"Jan's art is painterly, reminding me of Edward Hopper, Wayne Thiebaud, Wolf Kahn, Richard Diebenkorn, and Maynard Dixon. As with these artists, Jan's work begins in observation of the everyday world, and then evolves and finds completion in the studio, as she works out formal interests of shape and color.
"Jan is a great “noticer” of the details of people and place. She shows us how posture and movement can reveal more than the familiar details of a face. The way people (or dogs!) casually position themselves in relation to others and to their surroundings can, when Jan takes notice, suggest the mysterious turnings of complex lives. In Jan's landscapes, she simply notices more than most other artists, from vantage points that few of us find.
"Jan is remarkably sophisticated as a painter of color and shape. Although an old-school romantic in her thematic choices, she is thoroughly contemporary in her belief that the canvas is "the thing." Jan is not concerned with creating illusions of a literal world. Rather, Jan calls forth the soulfulness of our common world.
"Jan's color work is brilliant. Her color choices are often surprising, but never seem arbitrary. She simply has a fine intuition for beauty. Because of her color work, I find her canvases are always joyful, even when containing the "un-joyful" sorrows and isolations of some of her subject material. Her paintings are fun to inspect up close, and with the changing light of day, whether near or far, I notice new colors, new shapes, new details, and above all, new mysteries. These are great works."
"I met Jan at "The Grog" in Newburyport, MA in the 1980's. Her work was hanging at the "Newburyport Art Association" gallery downtown. I was immediately taken by the surreal colors and abstractions of landscapes that I had driven by, unremarked. To this day, I find it odd that in spite of her colors being more vibrant and richer than those in nature she gets the light right. Her paintings make me feel like I'm privy to someone's memories...in their native language. The last Jan Searle work I bought was an imaginary landscape painted on glass panes on the backside of a window frame. This piece adds an extra window to my kitchen without need for all that demolition.
